Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was officially sworn in on November 4th, 2015, gives a very simple answer as to why he decided to have 15 men and 15 women on his cabinet.

I’m sorry I have a problem with this. I don’t want to be hired for a position just because I’m a woman and they need to fill a quota. I want to be hired because  I was the best person for the job. Its demeaning that someone should have to hire me for the sake of Equality and not for my qualifications. This is really demeaning because its saying that without this quota I would not be hired, that the government needs to force someone to hire me for the sake of hiring a woman.

“Because it’s x year”, how you know your political argument is baseless.

I literally thought this was a joke until I read the captions. It looks like a gif-set from a Christopher Guest film.

Reblog for @jewishpolitics because she is telling the truth. Are these women qualified for the position? I would guess they are, but he doesn’t say. These women are numbers, that’s it. It’s a way of LOOKING good, not doing whats right for Canada. You cabinet should be filled with people who will do the right thing in their position, not quotas because it’s current year.

It means that someone more qualified could have been passed up because they were the wrong gender, all to keep up appearances. And this is supposed to be considered proggressive.

It’s one thing when you pick people  for your group or whatever based  on their merits and it so HAPPENS that the amount of men and women is equal (or some other quota).

But picking people SOLELY because your group “needs” to be 50% men and 50% women is doing more harm than good.

But… you guys really think he can’t find 15 women who are equally if not more qualified than the men he finds? You really think so?

it’s actually IMPOSSIBLE for a man to be more qualified to take a woman’s seat in a cabinet that’s supposed to represent Canada. Canada is 50% men and 50% women meaning you NEED women to have equal representation in government in order to have a fair system. also, do people not understand just how many people there were to choose from??????? There was a plethora of women to choose from (and these women were qualified enough to be voted in in their own ridings) …and it’s not like there were only 17 women and 15 of them were just handed them their spots.

reblogging for the last two comments, because everything else about this is gross, frankly.

also in defence of Trudeau’s flippant response… he’s clearly trying to convey just how ridiculous that question and, in fact, the whole situation is.

“Because it’s x year”, how you know your political argument is baseless.

except he’s not actually making any kind of argument? he’s merely pointing out that it’s 2015, not 1915 or 1815, and we’re meant to have equal rights by now. so it’s time to own up to that and actually see gender equality represented in the PM’s cabinet.

the idea that those 15 women were any less qualified than the 15 men he selected with them is misogynistic and pretty clearly demonstrates that you don’t understand how a person is chosen for the cabinet in the first place. like @kendralynora said, they were all elected in their own ridings based on their merit alone. one of those women, Carolyn Bennett, has been an MP since 1997… so please, tell me how she and her fellow female cabinet members are any less qualified than their male counterparts.

for anyone curious about the actual qualifications of all 30 cabinet members (not just the women) I recommend reading this article. or you know… doing a quick google search before spreading baseless rumours about the women in our government.
